Preliminarily Experiments of Liquid Scintillation Cocktail Waste Solidification

Liquid scintillation spectroscopy (LSC) is a widely used laboratory method for measuring radioactive especially low-energy alpha and beta emitter isotopes in solutions. Since the cocktails (SCs) contain large amounts of aromatic hydrocarbon compounds after LSC measurement, sample usually becomes organic waste, which challenging to manage dispose of. The most common effective waste treatment incineration, costly cumbersome solution. Another simpler less expensive way immobilization liquids by embedding cement or geopolymer matrix.The aim our experiments find universal mix design solidify immobilize cocktail wastes (SCWs) unknown composition. During we assumed that SCWs could Ultima Gold, Gold LLT, InstaGel Plus ProSafe FC type pure form mixed with quantities water. Therefore, performed inactive SCs as surrogates mimic SCWs. water content determination solutions difficult, must be independent SCWs.During experiments, found an appropriate all available up 5% using CEM I 42.5 N cement, Metaver metakaolin sodium hydroxide. We tested SCW this mix, product meets acceptance criteria Hungarian repositories.
